Deerfield Manor is the home of Foresthaven Farm which is a division of John Mel Stables owned by Melanie Michaels and John Ryan. Together they have brought their collective experience of business and horses and have plans to build Deerfield Manor into a peaceful place in which to raise equine athletes for the track and hunter/jumper and dressage rings. There are also plans to offer equine assisted health and wellness programs for people. They also have a passion for enjoying trail rides together and with other likeminded friends.
Melanie has over 30 years of experience with horses. Starting with her first pony at age seven, she became an avid equestrian competing hunter and jumper and then eventing. She started her first horse at age 12, a small young difficult mare who her parents purchased for $250 and within 3 years they were offered $10,000 ( A lot of money in those days!). She is proud to say she obtained her foundation in horsemanship through the Canadian Pony Club system where she attained her “B” level. She successfully competed in many C and B rallies over the years culminating in being selected for the Nationals. Since then has continued to build her skill and knowledge by attending clinics and taking lessons from world class competitors.
Melanie has started many horses of all breeds over the 30 plus years. Recently she has added starting a 17 year old clyde cross mare to her resume. Melanie loves working with young or unmade horses, whether it is starting them, or making them trail safe or competition ready. She will tell you that each horse always has something to teach you, you just have to listen.
Breeding top quality performance horses has also become a passion. Whether it be a thoroughbred or standardbred race horse or a warmblood, draft cross or welsh pony. Conformation, pedigree, athletic ability and temperament are paramount to the breeding program. We are proud to offer a wide range of youngsters, all who have had the best start in life to make them successful in their chosen profession.
John is an accountant by trade and a successful entrepreneur. He became interested in owning racehorses when a business associate suggested it to him a few years ago. He bought his first racehorse and there was no looking back!
For a city boy John has embraced farm life wholeheartedly. He can often be seen on the farm playing with his toys, whether its cleaning paddocks or putting out hay or doing endless grass cutting. He has been referred to as the “horse whisperer” as he has an uncanny knack with some horses can also be heard asking the horses as he gives them a pat or rub “how was your day today”
